The Cineca Data Center in Bologna, “sustainably constructed” by the Engineering BU

sede cineca | Cefla

Cefla’s Engineering BU designed and oversaw the construction of the Cineca Data Center. This facility is part of the Bologna Tecnopolo hub, which also houses ‘Leonardo’, one of the world’s most powerful supercomputers and a vital asset for the Italian and European scientific community.

Cineca recently obtained internationally recognised ‘LEED BD+C: Data Centers – Platinum Level’ certification, the highest level possible, making it one of the world’s 11 most sustainable data centers, three of which are in Italy.
LEED stands for ‘Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design’. The most widespread international protocol for sustainable buildings, it certifies the well-being of the people who occupy them by acknowledging the high-quality indoor environments and low-level CO2 emissions. Consequently, LEED is fast becoming the new global standard for eco-compatible construction.

This achievement makes Bologna Tecnopolo a center of excellence for high-performance computing and sustainable construction, combining computational power with environmental responsibility. This extremely impressive result comes at the end of a project to which the Engineering BU has been committed for several years as project leader.

“For Cefla, the true value of this certification – achieved in collaboration with the Macro Design Studio – lies in the fact that it can only be obtained by working consistently in compliance with strict sustainability, efficiency, quality and innovation standards”, points out Massimo Milani, Director of Cefla’s Engineering BU.
