Cefla Engineering is behind the expansion of Tema Sinergie: technological excellence and industrial regeneration in Faenza

The architectural concept, designed by the architectural practice “Architetto Maura Cantagalli”, was selected as the best major project for the Emilia-Romagna region in the third edition of the Aureum Templum 2026 Award.
The event, organised by Architetti Italiani, took place on 20 May in the prestigious setting of the Campidoglio in Rome. The initiative was held under the patronage of the Ministries of Tourism, Culture, Infrastructure and Transport, the Environment, and Energy Security, as well as that of the National Council of Architects, Planners, Landscape Architects and Conservators.
The plant engineering project by Cefla Engineering – acting as EPC General Contractor – based on the design by Maura Cantagalli Architects, provides the Faenza area with a state-of-the-art industrial hub, where sustainable architecture and innovative plant engineering come together to support the growth of a leading company in the medical sector.
Putting down roots in the local community whilst looking to global markets: this is the vision that has guided the architectural project and the collaboration between Cefla Engineering and Tema Sinergie, a world-leading company in the fields of nuclear medicine and the pharmaceutical industry.
Cefla’s Engineering Business Unit has completed the extension of Tema Sinergie’s headquarters, undertaking a complex project that involved the use of the EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) contracting model to transform an industrial site into a modern and functional architectural complex.
A bespoke project combining efficiency and operational continuity
As General Contractor, Cefla orchestrated every stage of the project: from the detailed structural and services design through to the complete construction of the building, from the foundations right up to the roof.
The real technical challenge was managing a tight schedule that began in February 2023 and concluded in February 2025. Thanks to ‘just-in-time’ logistics and the use of prefabricated construction systems,
Cefla ensured the existing plant’s operations continued uninterrupted, allowing Tema Sinergie to carry on with its production activities throughout the construction period.
Sustainability and design: the value of regeneration
In addition to increasing the building’s volume, the project has led to a comprehensive aesthetic and environmental regeneration of the site. The project was developed around several key pillars:
Urban regeneration: The redevelopment of an existing industrial site has helped to limit the use of new land, restoring value to the surrounding landscape.
Energy performance: The integration of state-of-the-art mechanical and electrical systems, including a new heating and cooling plant and provision for rooftop solar panels, ensures high standards of efficiency.
Comfort and well-being: The spaces have been designed to enhance the working experience.
Architectural identity: The distinctive perforated metal sunshade not only shields the façades, improving thermal comfort, but also revitalises the image of the entire development, conveying Tema Sinergie’s values of professionalism and innovation.

A strategic partnership for the local area
The completion of this extension, covering a total area of approximately 11,487 m², represents a significant milestone for the entire Faenza community.
With this project, Cefla Engineering confirms its role as the leading technology partner for major companies in the region, capable of managing the complexity of large-scale projects through an integrated approach that combines technical expertise, flexibility and a strong focus on environmental sustainability.
